Reliability in Action: How Santos Reduced Downtime, Inventory Costs and Operational Risk

Perspective
Maintenance Stage
Day 01

Reliable operations depend on having the right spare parts available when they are needed—but determining what to hold, where to hold it and in what quantity is a complex engineering challenge. Santos undertook a structured review of spare parts management across its Coal Seam Gas operations to develop a consistent, risk-based approach to inventory optimisation. By improving engineering data, safety stock methodology and governance, the project established a repeatable framework for better inventory decisions. This presentation shares the methodology, outcomes and practical lessons learned to help asset-intensive organisations improve reliability, reduce inventory costs and lower operational risk.

  • Understanding the inventory challenge facing large asset-intensive operations
  • Balancing reliability, cost and operational risk through better inventory decisions
  • Developing a consistent, risk-based approach to spare parts optimisation
  • Improving safety stock, engineering data and governance to support reliability
  • Delivering measurable business outcomes through practical engineering improvements
  • Moving from one-off projects to continuous inventory optimisation
