A Conversation with Dr. Bob Platfoot – a MAINSTREAM 30th Anniversary Featured Session
Australia has produced world-class maintenance, reliability and asset management thinking. We built world-leading refineries, iron ore operations and power infrastructure that set global benchmarks. We trained engineers who shaped industries. We did the hard, unglamorous, data-driven, people-intensive work.
So why does one of the architects of that legacy lie awake at three in the morning?
In this landmark conversation, marking MAINSTREAM’S 30th anniversary and over four decades of Bob Platfoot's contribution to the field, we go beyond the textbooks and consulting war stories to ask the questions that matter. Bob was there at the beginning. He helped build the intellectual foundation Australian practitioners stand on today. And now he has one urgent question for the next generation:
Will you care for what we built, as much as we did?
Bob’s message is less a warning than a dare – that Australia has the talent, the track record, and the tools to lead the world in this field, but greatness in any industry is never inherited, it's chosen, every day, by the people willing to do the unglamorous work that keeps everything else running.
Dr. Bob Platfoot is the Principal and Managing Director of Covaris, founded in 2000 to advance practical asset management techniques. He began his career in NSW power stations, earned his PhD in fluid dynamics and life assessment of coal-fired boilers, and spent years on faculty at UNSW before taking his research into industry. A MAINSTREAM member since year one, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to sit with one of Australia's great engineering minds and ask: what did we learn, what did we lose, and what must we never let go of?
