From Blind Spots to Governed Intelligence: Continuous Computer Vision Monitoring at South32

Perspective
Data Stage
Day 01

Heavy industrial sites operate continuously across day and night shifts, yet monitoring coverage has historically been uneven, periodic, and dependent on personnel availability.

South32, working with Unleash live, deployed computer vision monitoring across critical operational zones and high-risk vehicle movement corridors, including stop sign and boom gate compliance, to generate continuous, automated oversight of asset conditions, operational controls, and safety-critical behaviours.

The result was a persistent evidence base supporting targeted operational interventions, behavioural safety programs, and regulatory compliance obligations across all shift hours. This session covers how the program was scoped, deployed, and integrated into operational governance.

  1. Computer vision closes structural detection gaps that periodic manual monitoring cannot address, across both asset conditions and safety-critical behaviours, generating an evidence base that supports operational governance and regulatory compliance across all shift hours
  2. Continuous monitoring reveals risk patterns and behavioural conditions that shift-level observation and point inspections consistently miss, enabling a move from reactive response to evidence-based intervention across operational and safety programs simultaneously
  3. The operational intelligence generated by a monitoring program compounds beyond its primary purpose: data captured continuously across day and night shifts supports root cause investigation, compliance reporting, and process improvement in ways that periodic inspection never could
