Asset-intensive organisations often struggle with a common challenge: unpredictable equipment performance, growing compliance risk and Engineering teams that are expected to solve increasingly complex problems while operating within structures not designed to deliver reliability outcomes.

This presentation shares the transformation journey of a global industrial operation that fundamentally redefined its Engineering function to address these challenges. A new organisational vision was established, deliberately separating Engineering into three complementary disciplines: Reliability Engineering, Maintenance Engineering and Compliance Engineering. This clear delineation of purpose, accountability and governance enabled focused decision-making, improved execution and stronger alignment between asset strategy and operational outcomes.

More than an organisational redesign, the transformation created a new way of working. Through the development of a clear operating model, defined accountabilities, structured governance and active workforce involvement in the design process, the business built ownership, reduced resistance to change and established a sustainable foundation for long-term improvement.

The results demonstrated the power of aligning Engineering activities to business outcomes. Over a two-year period, the operation achieved a 51% reduction in Loss of Containment events, significantly reducing exposure to safety hazards and operational risk. Critical overdue asset strategy work reduced by approximately 44%.
