Moon Base: The Role of Maintenance and Reliability on the Surface of the Moon

Keynote
Main Stage
Day 01

In addition to returning humans to the surface of the Moon, NASA has begun the creation of a permanent base at the Moon’s south pole. In the coming years, this Moon Base will establish a permanent human presence on the lunar surface. With a city on the Moon’s surface, what maintenance and reliability challenges await and how will NASA handle them?

This keynote will provide an overview of NASA’s plans to return humans to the lunar surface with the Artemis program and explain NASA’s plans for establishing a permanent human presence with the Moon Base program. Establishing an outpost in the hostile and rugged lunar environment poses a number of maintenance and reliability challenges, many of which are identical to those being faced by industry today on Earth.

As a experiment to conclude the first day of the MAINSTREAM Conference, consider the potential for applying industry’s approaches to addressing Earth-based maintenance and reliability challenges to lunar applications.
